5th European poster biennial for art and design schools 2010 with the theme: »mare nostrum«
»mare nostrum«
was chosen as the topic for the poster contest of the 5th European
Poster Biennial for art and design schools.
Increased participation in past Biennials and the intellectual and
creative standards achieved have challenged the organisers to extend
the geographical scope of the Biennial and its artistic themes.
The continent of Europe is enclosed by oceans, an integral component
of the ecological sphere of the Earth. Life had its origin in
the oceans. The living conditions of humankind, our economy,
nutrition, communication and global politics are closely related to
the sea, whose impact is more or less beneficial. The steady growth
of global production and the hectic competition between industrialised
nations inevitably imposes increasing ecological burdens
on nature, on sea routes, and the climate.
The topic encompasses both the coastal regions of Europe, and
the rivers which originate in its heartland and flow into the sea,
their decontamination and pollution control, the preservation of
finite fishing resources as opposed to their overexploitation, the
risk of species extinction, the rising demand for water as global
energy production strives to keep pace with rising population, and
defences against predicted rise of the sea level and the growing
threats of storm tides. Our oceans also function as borders between
poverty and wealth. White luxury liners flaunt ostentatious wealth
across the same seas used by others risking their very lives fleeing
poverty.

Entry to the competition is open to all students of universities,
professional schools and higher vocational schools with an artistic
