Introduction

This year Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow celebrates its 190th anniversary, which is an opportunity for me not only to reflect on our long tradition, but take a closer look at our present time and our future. However, those three dimensions are related to each other as Polish Romantic poet Cyprian Kamil Norwid says in one of his poems the past is the present day, only a bit further. So, the future is a day to come.

During last decades our Academy has undergone the process of reforms in terms of structure, curricula, and internationalization. Not only have new areas of study, departments, levels and forms of education emerged during recent years, but more and more students from Poland and abroad are interested in coming to study at our university. They are interested mainly in the creative atmosphere existing in our studios and tradition which smoothly merges with avant-garde trends which are the object of fascination among young artists and constitute an integral part of our educational offer.

Our courses are directed to artists in a variety of artistic and design domains. They are described in this admission guide. So, overseas candidates may apply for 1st-cycle studies, 2nd-cycle studies, 3rd-cycle studies (doctoral) both part-time and full-time. Our educational offer is supplemented by the, so called, Open Studies for art fans and artistic internship, which enable overseas students and artists to undergo professional artistic/design training in a flexible and adapted to personal needs way.

Our students are encouraged to participate in the Life-long learning/Erasmus programme, CEEPUS programme (Central Europe Exchange Programme for University Studies) an the mobility exchange studies with many partner universities. The level of internationalization of our Academy is still improving. Many conferences and lectures delivered by foreign professors add to our efforts aiming at competing successfully on the international market of education. In the close future we are going to enable overseas students to study in English, which is an appropriate response to globalization challenges we face in the modern times.

Our mission is to prepare young artists for active participation in artistic life and develop both their artistic skills and intellectual power so that they could be independent and responsible persons prepared for realizing and expressing their ideas in the modern world.
All our teaching staff, consisting of many prominent personalities, serve these goals.

We wish our modern Academy to be worth its dignified tradition.

Prof. Adam Wsiołkowski
Rector

History
The Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow is a state artistic school of higher education at university level. The number of students of Cracow Academy, for several years has amounted to over 1000 persons. The language of instruction is Polish.  The programme of artistic training may be realised in the selected studios in English, French and German.
Akademia Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie is the oldest artistic school of higher education in Poland. It was founded in 1818 and in the initial period it was included in the structure of Jagiellonian University. After emancipation in 1873 it assumed the name of School of Fine Arts, and Jan Matejko (1838-1893), an eminent Polish painter, since 1979 an official patron of the Academy, became its director. He played a fundamental role in shaping the artistic circle in Cracow and educated many outstanding disciples. His successor and the 1st Rector, Julian Fałat, a prominent landscape painter, has earned much respect as a reformer of the Academy, which at that time assumed the name of Akademia Sztuk Pięknych. At the turn of the centuries the most prominent artists taught there, and the Academy became a centre of Polish artistic life. After Poland regained independence (1918) a branch of the Academy in Paris was erected, which was active till the end of the 1930s and it influenced significantly the development and promotion of Polish art. From 1950s up till 1st September 2001 the Academy had a branch in Katowice, which became an independent Academy. Just after World War II, despite substantial losses suffered by the local artistic circle during the Nazi occupation, two artistic schools were founded - the reborn Academy attracting above all the representatives of painting, sculpture and printmaking, and Higher School of Applied Arts (Wyższa Szkoła Sztuk Plastycznych), with the Faculties of Architecture, Textile, Printing, Design, and the first organisational structures of the Faculty of Conservation. After their merger in 1950 the school was erected, which had the form of the present Akademia Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie. It had also the Design Faculties and developed in terms of structure, teaching staff, equipment, teaching areas and methods. It remains faithful to its own glorious tradition as well as open to challenges and needs of the present time. Many of its post-war graduates (more than 6700) - painters, sculptors, printmakers, interior and industrial designers, stage designers and conservators - effectively co-create Polish culture and promote it all over the world, where they run their activity and their works may be seen.
